Update on Personal Electronic Devices

Dear Families and Students,

I hope the end of February finds you all well. I am writing today to provide an update on the implementation of Governor Kotek’s personal electronic device ban at South.

Throughout January and February, staff have been supporting students with verbal reminders to keep phones off and away throughout the school day. After students have received reminders, we have stored students’ phones in the office until the end of the day.

At this time, students have received ample reminders of the Governor’s executive order. Moving forward, we will be continuing to provide all-school reminders via announcements and classroom reminders, and from there we will expect all students to comply with the policy. Students who have their phones out during instructional hours from 8:30-3:30 can expect to have their phone taken to the office for the day without additional individual verbal reminders.

We ask that you please assist us in this effort by not texting or calling students during the day. If you wish to get in touch with your student, please call the front office at 541-790-8000. We can send your student a note to come to the office to call. We also have spaces for private phone calls.

I understand that this is an adjustment for all of us. Our goal will continue to be to apply the new expectations fairly and consistently to create the best learning day possible for all students. If you have questions or additional thoughts, I invite you to reach out to me at 541-790-8000 or via email at zublin_k@4j.lane.edu.

Respectfully,
Kee

Important Testing Information!

This March 11th (and 12th, if needed) is our State Testing Day and your chance to show off for the State of Oregon's Department of Education! As a benefit, this is an opportunity to practice on a real standardized test that doesn't impact you individually before the April 9th SAT Testing Day, which has specific individual benefits. We will have all Juniors who are testing meet in the Small Gym at 8:30am, then take the regularly-scheduled breakfast and lunch breaks before concluding before 2:30pm. Students who take and complete (legitimately) the test may return to classes or be excused from Campus for the remainder of the 11th.

If you have a valid reason to Opt-Out of the OSAS Test, please complete the forms at the Front Office or Counseling Office prior to the test. Note: There is one form to opt-out of Language Arts and Math, and a second form for Science.

You will need your own charged laptop and we need to verify, using the process below, if your 4J laptop is up-to-date. (Calculators are built into the testing program, so you DO NOT need to bring a calculator.) In order to use the 4J laptop for OSAS, you will need to check the version of the Operating System installed.

To check the Operating System (OS) Version: Click on the Apple Logo in the upper left hand corner of the screen and click on “About This Mac”.
In the window that appears look about ¾ of the way down for the name and version of the Operating System installed.  If the version is not 15.0 or higher, (most are 15.5) it will need to be updated in order to run the OSAS Browser app to take the test.

If your system is 15.0 or higher, you are good for Testing Day! If not, Rose, South's Tech Support Specialist, will need to briefly take your laptop to update it by March 6th.  She will return the laptop to you after the OS has been updated. Please complete THIS FORM if your operating system is lower than 15 and we will contact you. Thanks!

More information on testing (and why it's important) is below, as a repeat from last weeks newsletter.

Announcement - OSAS Testing for 11th Graders

📝 OSAS Testing — A Smart Step Before the SAT

Attention 11th grade families! South Eugene High School will be offering OSAS (Oregon State Assessment System) testing on the mornings of Tuesday, March 11th and Wednesday, March 12th to all 11th graders.

If your student is planning to take the SAT on April 9th, the OSAS testing days are a valuable opportunity to get there more prepared. Sitting through a full standardized assessment — managing time, sustaining focus, and working under test conditions — is the kind of real practice that's hard to replicate any other way. By the time April 9th arrives, the format, pacing, and pressure of a long testing session will already feel familiar.

Why it matters:

  • Builds endurance and focus for multi-hour testing
  • Reduces test-day anxiety by making the experience feel routine
  • Reinforces time management skills under real conditions
  • Counts as meaningful academic participation — not just practice

We encourage all 11th graders to show up and treat these two days as the preparation opportunity they are. Students will be excused from any missed regular class meetings and teachers have been asked to plan around the testing window for their Juniors.

Questions? Reach out to your school counselor.
