South Eugene Site Council

Dear Families,
You are invited to serve on our South Eugene Site Council. Site Council is a collaborative group made up of staff, students, administrators and guardians.

Site Council meets three times per year to review our outcome data and provide perspectives on how we can improve. Additionally, Site Council provides input into our professional development planning with our staff. We greatly value the input of our Site Council and we hope you will consider joining.

The dates for Site Council are:
November 18th, 5-6:30
February 17th, 5-6:30
May 12th, 5-6:30

Please use this form to express your interest in serving on Site Council.

Personal Electronic Devices Reminder

As we've settled back into routine, many students have been given reminders about personal device usage this week. As a reminder, the following responses will occur if students have cell phones or other PEDs out between the first bell and last bell of the day:

  • Level 1: Verbal warning and reminder about the policy and school expectations

  • Level 2: Device will be confiscated and held in the office until the end of the school day, families will be notified, and minor referral issued.

  • Level 3: Device will be confiscated and held in the office until the end of the school day, followed by a required student conference with a family member and school administrator in attendance. Students may need to check-in their devices at the office at the start of the school day for a set period of time to reinforce expectations.

Classroom management will start at Level 1. However, out-of-class management, including hallways and restrooms during class, during transitions, and at lunchtime (on-campus only), may require a Level 2 response, based on in-class expectations and school-wide reminders during implementation. If phones are parked during class and packed during transitions, students will stay in compliance with the policy.

We also know that parents will need to have proactive support for planning and communication when students are unavailable by phone. Please consider the following options:

  • In an emergency or in an unexpected situation, please call the Front Office at 541-790-8000 to have a student contacted or brought up from class. If it’s an emergency, please state this so we can respond appropriately.

  • When an absence is known ahead of time, please contact our Attendance Line at 541-790-8008 or email dialsehs@4j.lane.edu. This will allow us to excuse appropriately, as well as send reminder notes to students.

  • Answer calls starting with “541-790-XXXX” as these are from 4J and may be your student calling from our Office.

If your child already does not have access to a Personal Electronic Device (cellphone, smart watch, etc.) during school hours, we would appreciate having a parent/guardian fill out this very short survey that lets us know.  We will be sharing that list of students with teachers to help inform them about their classroom management practices. We only want people whose child does not have access to a cell phone during the school day to fill out the survey.  Thanks!

Your child’s school pictures are now available! To view them online, please log in to your account at mylifetouch.com. If you don’t have an account yet, you can create one using your email address. You’ll need your student’s ID number or their portrait id and access code to locate their photos.

Missed picture day? Retakes are scheduled for 10/21.

Counseling Corner

Greetings from South Counseling! In addition to the academic happenings featured in last week’s newsletter, this week we are highlighting a few of the many social-emotional resources available at South in support of students. Families are invited to reach out for more information and to connect, and of course each student’s core rapport with their school counselor is a secure foundation for all needs. Drop-ins and appointments are available for students daily; visit our South Counseling page for details: https://tinyurl.com/SEHS-Counseling

Office of Student Well-Being

Jaime Hock is our resident on-site Mental Health Specialist in connection with the 4j Office of Student Well-Being. Jaime, QMHP, is available for social-emotional support by appointment throughout the school day at no cost to students, and is well-admired by students and staff for her genuine nature and authentic care for their lived experiences. Families can connect with Jaime at hock_j@4j.lane.edu for further information.

Oregon Social Learning Center

Hello! My name is Caghain McCoy. I’m a mental health and substance use counselor with the Adolescent and Family Services (AFS) program from Oregon Social Learning Center’s behavioral clinic. We offer inclusive, cost-free, and confidential mental health and/or substance use counseling at high schools within the 4J and Bethel School Districts. AFS uses interventions backed by science to help teens build skills to face life difficulties with strength and confidence. You can find more information about these services at https://odiclinic.org/.

Economic Justice League

Lisi Adams is an EA at South currently completing her Masters in Social Work. She is also the advisor for South’s vibrant Economic Justice League. This student group, under Lisi’s guidance, organizes an extensive clothing closet which is open to all students in our cafeteria each day. EJL also prepares weekly food boxes for South families, in relationship with Food For Lane County and through community donations, and secures other resources such as toiletries and school supplies for students as well. Find information at: https://sites.google.com/4j.lane.edu/economicjusticeleague/home?pli=1&authuser=0

The Hub: Community-Based Resources for Youth

The Hub is a downtown drop-in center for young people ages 14-24, launched by Connected Lane County, Ophelia’s Place, and A Family for Every Child. It offers free access to basic needs like showers, laundry, and food, plus mentoring, mental health support, education planning, and job support. The Hub is located at 44 W 7th Avenue in Eugene and is open Monday through Friday, 3:00 PM – 6:00 PM. https://www.connectedlane.org/

For students and families seeking counseling services beyond South, our 4j liaison provides a weekly summary of counseling programs with current openings.

Northlight has openings for youth and adults.

Riverview Center for Growth has openings.

Shine has openings for youth.

Academic Announcements

The last day to withdraw from a class without impact to a high school transcript is next Tuesday, October 6th. After that a physical form will need to be completed to withdraw and a mark will be noted on the transcript of WD (withdraw with passing grade) or WF (withdraw with failing grade). Juniors and seniors can find the electronic withdraw form on the South website: https://sehs.4j.lane.edu/32974_2. Students can also utilize drop in hours to discuss this process with their counselor.

If you are a junior or senior and you have a job in the community, please connect with your counselor to learn about how to earn Other Subject elective credit. You need to work a minimum of 65 hours this semester to earn the .5 credit.

The PSAT for 11th graders will be held at South on October 23th. This is a no fee exam, but students must sign up before October 9th through the link in their Class of 2028 Canvas Announcements.

All Seniors are invited to take the SAT at South for free on October 23rd. Seniors should check their Class of 2027 Canvas Announcements for the link to that form and must register before October 9th.

All SEHS seniors must schedule and attend a senior interview before the end of semester one. Counselors will review transcripts, senior year courses, graduation plan, and the array of post high school options. If students intend to apply to college their counselor will also walk them through the application process during this meeting. All Seniors should schedule this appointment here: https://app.acuityscheduling.com/schedule/71428f1c

Stay connected and watch here for additional opportunities through the school year.

Have a wonderful weekend, South!

COLLEGE APPLICATION AND FINANCIAL AID STUFF:

  • Purple Packet: For all South seniors applying to 4-year colleges. Step-by-step instructions for everything from requesting letters of recommendation to connecting your Common App and Xello accounts. Very important part of the college-application process.

  • Senior Interview: Step 1 in the Purple Packet. All seniors must complete a Senior Interview with their counselor this year. Seniors applying for early admission to college should schedule theirs immediately. This is a low-pressure visit to help you plan for next year, no matter where you’re headed (including non-college pathways).

  • 2027-28 FAFSA opened early! Recommended for all seniors who will or might attend college, community college, or trade school next year and who want financial aid or scholarships. This includes students in middle- and upper-income brackets. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals or eligible noncitizens. Parental status doesn’t matter. Who is My Parent(s) Contributor? (Quiz to help  students confirm which parent(s) financial information needs reported on the FAFSA)

  • FAFSA Real-Time Identity & Fraud Screening: To prevent identity theft, a real-time screening system runs in the background as you complete your FAFSA. If your FAFSA is flagged, you may be prompted to take a live photo of your government-issued photo ID before submitting the form. If you cannot or choose not to complete the online ID check immediately, you can still submit your FAFSA. However, you will be required to verify your identity directly with your college’s financial aid office before any federal aid can be released.

The 11th-grade PSAT also serves as an application for National Merit Scholarships. The SAT is required for admission to some colleges/universities and can help with admission and scholarship applications even when not required.

10/9: WOU Fall Preview Day. 9 am- 3 pm. Whether just starting to explore or already planning to apply, this event is designed to help you learn more. You’ll explore campus, meet current students and faculty, tour residence halls, and get help with your next steps.
