Club 9 Special Schedule
Club 9 is an opportunity for students to get individualized help from teachers, taking place in the library every Monday and Thursday from 3:30 - 4:30.

For the final two weeks of the semester, the days and times will be adjusted with extended hours as follows:

TUES. 1/21  - 3:30 - 5:30
Thurs. 1/23  - 3:30 - 5:30

Mon.  1/27 - 3:30 - 5:30
TUES. 1/28 - 3:30 - 5:30

(While Club 9 is considered a 9th grade academic enrichment activity, it is always open to all students).
 
Peer Tutoring at South
After school on Wednesdays, we have peer tutors available in the library waiting to help students in the following subject areas:

-Math
-Science
-Social Studies
-Spanish
-Japanese
-French

Tutoring is available to all students on a drop-in bases every Wednesday in the library from 2:30 - 3:30.
 
School Choice
In Eugene School District 4J, every school offers an excellent education for our students. Students may enroll in their neighborhood school at any time, or may request to enroll in a different 4J school provided there is space available. School choice requests will be accepted in an order determined by lottery.

High Schools: Churchill, North, Sheldon, South, Churchill IHS, Sheldon IHS, South IHS

To be included in the lottery, 4J residents must submit a request form by January 31 at midnight. Non-district residents must submit a request form between March 1 and 31. All students who want to obtain a transfer must submit a request form, including new incoming siblings and students who have moved out of the district and want to remain enrolled next year. Not all schools are open to non-district resident requests. Virtual and in-person school visits are scheduled in the month of January. If you have any friends or family members who are considering school choice, please invite them to learn more about their school choice options!

2024 SEHS Financial-Aid Night Webinar recording. Presentation begins at 2:32. It includes an overview and Q & A session presented by financial-aid representatives from the University of Oregon and Lane Community College.

FAFSA Pro Tip from a staff member at the Oregon Higher Education Coordinating Committee: "We have been told that adding zeros in the financial fields is important.  In other words, don’t leave fields blank even if you don’t have a number to add.”


Oregon Student Aid Application (ORSAA) now open! This is an alternative to the FAFSA for undocumented Oregon students including students who have DACA or TPS status. By filing the ORSAA, students in Oregon can get help paying for college through grants, scholarships, and tuition reduction. Pro-Tip: Students should always begin the form. Parents should do their part after their student has submitted. (Students who are U.S. citizens and permanent residents fill out the FAFSA even if their parents are undocumented.)

Reed College now offers tuition-free education for families earning under $100,000. Reed will cover the full cost of tuition for all Oregon and Washington undergraduate students and transfer students from families with a total annual income below $100,000 with typical assets, starting in fall 2025.

Now: Application window open for the World of Work (WoW) High School Internship Program at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art (JSMA) at the U of O. This is a 3-month, hands-on, paid internship for high school students from underserved populations in grades 9-12. It provides them with the resources for pursuing careers in museum and creative fields and will take place on Wednesdays from 4-6 pm from 4/9-6/4.Deadline: 2/13.

1/13: LCC’s RTEC101 course begins. Free, 1-credit, online LCC class for seniors. This class is all about preparing you with the necessary tools and resources you need to become a successful student at Lane.

1/14: Elevate Lane County winter job shadow application deadline. 60 applicants will be selected to visit a local company in their career field of interest for a 3-hour job shadow experience. Elevate gives priority to students who have completed a job shadow when they also apply to Elevate’s paid summer internship program.

1/14: Connected Lane County Pride Night from 4:30-6 pm at Spark at Booth-Kelly (303 S 5th St, Suite 150, Springfield). Inclusive and engaging experiences designed for queer, trans, and non-binary youth and allies! This month’s topic is Out in STEM.


1/16: BIPOC Blueprint from 4:30-6 pm at Spark on 7th (22 W 7th Ave, Eugene). This is a space for BIPoC youth to connect, build resilience, and foster cultural pride. Open to youth in grades 8-12.


1/27: Paid summer internship (through Connected Lane County) application opens. This 7-week, in-person experience is for juniors and seniors, is based on participants’ career interests, and will take place in July and August. Interns begin with an internship orientation and a financial foundations course, then begin a 40 hour/week internship with a local company. Deadline to apply: 2/24.

1/29: Connected Lane County’s monthly Wonder Wednesday workshop. Free event held in person at two locations [Spark at Booth-Kelly (303 S 5th St, Suite 150, Springfield) and the Cottage Grove Community Center (700 E Gibbs Ave, Cottage Grove)] with a virtual option, as well. Classes run from 4:30-5:30 pm, with free dinner available at 4:00 pm. This month’s topic: Navigating Health Systems (discussing health insurance options, finding a Primary Care Provider, sex education, etc.).

1/29: SEHS FAFSA Completion Workshop at 7:00 pm in SEHS room 6. RSVP strongly requested in order to adequately staff this hands-on event. Email Lori Sauter (sauter_l@4j.lane.edu) to confirm that you plan to attend. Spanish-language assistance available. More details to come.

2/3: DevNW Financial Foundations class, 1st day of 4-day Zoom workshop (Mon-Thu) from 4-6 pm. 2-hour classes each day that cover money management, credit, taxes, investing, avoiding debt, buying a car, paying for school, and other personal-finance topics relevant to Lane County youth ages 14-24.

2/11: Deadline to sign up for Rent Well. This is a free virtual tenant education program for 17-24 year olds. Classes take place every Wed. from 2/12-3/19 from 4-6 pm at Spark at Booth-Kelly (303 S 5th St, Suite 150, Springfield) or virtually. It gives prospective renters the tools and skill set to become successful tenants. Participants will learn to identify potential screening barriers, understand how and why a landlord will screen you, create an individualized plan for stable housing and more.

2/15: Deadline to apply for STEP-UP, a summer research program that connects juniors and seniors belonging to underrepresented demographic groups with local institutions and mentors to help them gain firsthand research experience. (Also, see flier below.)

2/18: Early-bird deadline for the OSAC Scholarships common application. College- (2-year, 4-year, vocational) bound seniors can use this application to apply to hundreds of different scholarships using a single application. Hint: This scholarship catalog should make it easier to search for scholarships since OSAC’s scholarship filter leaves something to be desired!

2/21: Preview Day, 9 am - 1 pm@Portland Community College - Rock Creek Campus
Learn how to prepare for PCC, check out their programs and financial aid, interact with faculty and staff, and explore the campus. Space is limited, so sign up soon!

Classes run from 4:30-5:30 pm, with free dinner available at 4:00 pm. This month’s topic: Transportation Station (learn about maintenance for bikes and cars, along with bus information).

3/3: Deadline for the Ford Family Foundation Ford Scholarship Program application. This is a high-value, regional scholarship for seniors or recent high school graduates who work hard, have significant financial need, and face barriers to higher education. Up to 130 renewable scholarships are awarded each year to students from Oregon and Siskiyou County, California.

3/3: Final deadline for the OSAC Scholarships common application. College- (2-year, 4-year, vocational) bound seniors can use this single application to apply to hundreds of different scholarships. FAFSA or ORSAA completion recommended but not required. Hint: This scholarship catalog should make it easier to search for scholarships since OSAC’s scholarship filter leaves something to be desired!

3/4: Deadline for the LCC Foundation Scholarships common application. LCC-bound seniors can use this single application to apply to hundreds of different scholarships for every background, major, GPA, etc. FAFSA or ORSAA completion recommended but not required. 3/14: Preview Day, 8:45 am - 1:15 pm@Eastern Oregon University. Connect with current students, explore clubs and organizations, tour the campus, and learn about admissions and financial aid. Lunch is included for one student and two guests.

3/26: Connected Lane County’s monthly Wonder Wednesday workshop. Free event held in person at two locations [Spark at Booth-Kelly (303 S 5th St, Suite 150, Springfield) and the Cottage Grove Community Center (700 E Gibbs Ave, Cottage Grove)] with a virtual option, as well. 3/31: LCC’s RTEC101 course begins. Free, 1-credit, hybrid LCC class for seniors. This class is all about preparing you with the necessary tools and resources you need to become a successful student at Lane.

4/1: Regular-decision applicants to 4-year colleges usually receive admission decisions by this date. Students should request that their final transcript be sent to their chosen school once they decide, if required by that school.

4/11: Preview Day, 8:45 am - 1:15 pm@Eastern Oregon University. Connect with current students, explore clubs and organizations, tour the campus, and learn about admissions and financial aid. Lunch is included for one student and two guests.

4/30: Connected Lane County’s monthly Wonder Wednesday workshop. Free event held in person at two locations [Spark at Booth-Kelly (303 S 5th St, Suite 150, Springfield) and the Cottage Grove Community Center (700 E Gibbs Ave, Cottage Grove)] with a virtual option, as well. Classes run from 4:30-5:30 pm, with free dinner available at 4:00 pm. This month’s topic: Making it Last (learn how to sew, mend, and repair small household items).

5/16: LCC Trades Expo. Free event that includes Automotive, Construction, Diesel, Drafting, Fabrication/Welding, and Manufacturing programs. 5/28:  Connected Lane County’s monthly Wonder Wednesday workshop. Classes run from 4:30-5:30 pm, with free dinner available at 4:00 pm. This month’s topic: Adulting 101 (everything you need to know about being an adult).

  • Amount: Should cover most of the cost of attending an Oregon community college (when added to federal and state grants also awarded to the student)
  • For: Oregon community-college bound-seniors who will begin college within 6 months of high-school graduation
  • Requirements:
  1. Minimum cumulative high school GPA of 2.0
  2. Oregon resident for at least 12 months prior to college attendance
  3. Possible limits based on Student Aid Index (SAI) from FAFSA/ORSAA. Some years, there are maximum SAIs. Some years there are not. This is usually decided by the OR legislature in spring or summer.
Details: (Easy) application and FAFSA or ORSAA submission required. List at least one Oregon community college on the FAFSA or ORSAA.
