Dear South Eugene Students and Families,
I hope that you and your family are well as we make our way through October together. Students and teachers have been getting familiar with new patterns, challenges, and opportunities, and it has been encouraging to see students digging in to learning this fall.
I wanted to resend the information below about how parents can become Observers in their student’s Canvas courses and stay informed in 2020-2021 about students’ grades and progress. We know that your conversations at home about courses and learning are a key part of student success.
Grading and Student Progress in Canvas: Parents have the ability to become an Observer in a Canvas course and see coursework planned for students and their student’s grades. Instructions for becoming an Observer are available at https://www.4j.lane.edu/instruction/canvas/ Observers can find additional information about navigating Canvas by clicking on this Canvas Observer Guide.
What about ParentVUE?: It is important for families to know that StudentVUE/ParentVUE are still available for student schedule and attendance information. Also, on Progress Report Grading Day (Oct. 23) and on Trimester 1 Grading Day (Dec. 11), teachers will input the letter grade from Canvas into StudentVUE/ParentVUE for official reports at those two times of the term.
However, families should not anticipate using StudentVUE/ParentVUE for information on students’ grades between reporting periods unless the teacher has indicated that they are using Synergy as well as Canvas. In fact, please be aware that StudentVUE/ParentVUE may not be synched to Canvas for many classes and may not provide an accurate picture of students’ progress. In short, parents should plan to access students’ grades through Canvas for the most accurate picture of students’ progress during the trimester.
Information for Students and Families: We encourage families to subscribe to the e-News, which comes out weekly on Friday morning as a service from Parent Council volunteer Jeff Cook who helps compile details each week. It includes information about upcoming virtual events in October, opportunities for students, scholarships, and more.
To SIGN UP send a blank e-mail to email@example.com.
Weekly announcements for students will be posted on our website throughout the year. Student Government is working on regular communication to our student body, and our students in CTE produce the AXE Report occasionally throughout the year.
Textbooks and Materials: If students are still needing specific textbooks or materials for classes as designated by their teacher or have items to return, we have pickup/drop off time from 1:00pm-2:00pm daily at the Auditorium Lobby. Wear a face covering, stay safe, and let us connect you with what you need for learning. It’s great to see you!
Wednesday, Oct. 14 is an Advisory Day and students will have synchronous Advisory via Zoom at 10:15am and time to engage in coursework in all their classes. Office hours for teachers are listed in their syllabi in Canvas.
Our students and teachers fill me with hope about the future. I know that the investment of time our students are putting in to learning this year is helping them build skills for the years to come. Together, we can make the most out of the opportunities presented by online learning this fall.
