Today’s empowering women is Detective Lola Greene Baldwin, one of the first full-time, paid, female police officers in the US. In her many years as a city of Portland Police Officer, Lola often focused her work on the welfare of women and girls. She was responsible for acquiring funds for several public large projects to benefit disadvantaged women, including the Hillcrest Oregon Industrial School for Girls. Detective Lola Dalwin supervised the officers of the Portland Police Department Women’s Protective Division form 1908-1922 and set an important precedent for female officers and detectives.
