Daily Announcements Friday, March 23

Administration: We are sorry, but the bathroom in the 400 hall will be closed for some time as we make repairs to a broken pipe that was recently discovered. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Career Center: Hey Seniors! Now is the time to watch for local scholarships. There is a lot of local scholarship money available right now, and there’s less competition for local scholarships compared to national ones. Eugene Southtowne Rotary Club and the 4J Maps First Generation Scholarship are two local scholarships coming due soon. Don’t miss your chance to apply for local scholarships. Stop by the Career Center for more information.

Camp RYLA is a free overnight camp for current sophomores with an interest in developing their leadership skills.  It will take place in Dorena from June 23rd through June 28th. Come to the Career Center to pick up paper copies of the application or to get the link for the downloadable version. Applications are due back in the Career Center by Friday, April 13th, and applicants will be interviewed later in April by members of the Southtowne Rotary Club.

The U of O’s SAIL camp is a free day camp located on campus and intended for incoming 9th through 12th graders. SAIL students choose camps with specific academic focuses such as human physiology, journalism, and product design, among many others. All SAIL programs also include sessions on the college-admissions process, scholarship availability, and the financial aid process. Participant preference is given to students from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds. Visit the SAIL webpage on the U of O’s website, or come to the Career Center for more information.

Seniors headed to the U of O and planning to major in business: we have a scholarship opportunity for you! The Ehrman V. Guistina Scholarship, due March 30th, is a $2,000 award, renewable for 4 years, specifically for an SEHS student. For more information, look on South’s website in the Current Scholarships section, or come to the Career Center for more information.

The Friends of Eugene Public Library needs volunteers for the annual Book Sale in mid-April. Get community service hours and help the library. Check their website or the Volunteer Board in the Career Center.

SEHS Feminist Union: Today, we’ll be profiling Rachel Carson for Women’s History Month. Rachel Carson was a writer, scientist, ecologist, and environmentalist. She pioneered the environmentalist movement of the 60’s and 70’s. Because of her books and research on environmentalism, the US Senate opened an investigation of pesticides. She also served on the American Academy of Arts and Sciences before her death. She impacted the way the United States government handles environmental crises, and her research influenced environmentalist movements across the world.

Job Opportunity for Seniors: Pacific Oasis Wildland Firefighting is offering a training session during Spring Break. If you will be 18 years old by summer and are interested, see Kathy Ruggles in room 302 for more information.

Student Government: Penny Wars is now April 2nd through April 6th! This is a class competition that raises money for the Axemen Angels! Each penny is worth one point and everything else is negative points. Students can donate in the large collection box in the Main Hall or they can give money to Student Government members collecting money from classes.

Axespresso: Announcing the $2 smoothie special! In celebration of spring break, all our smoothies will be just $2 for the rest of this week. Check out our flavors: Tropical Harmony, Mellow Mango, Summer Strawberry Banana, and our newest addition – Superfruit Allstars!

Today, come check out Axespresso’s Open Mic! 4:00-5:30pm, South Cafeteria. Music, poetry, dance, comedy – anything goes! Come perform or just hang out and support your friends!
